Microsoft has released the final version of Windows 10 2004, the spring edition also known as Windows 10 May 2019 Update, which will be gradually deployed to update computers with previous versions of the system.
Somewhat later than expected due to the increase in the trial period to limit errors (such as a “Zero-Day” exploit discovered in the latest test compilation released to the Insiders) and surely due to the COVID pandemic that has separated the Working groups, Microsoft has released a new version of the operating system. Like the previous ones, it is available for free for customers with valid licenses of previous versions of Windows 10 or even other previous systems like Windows 7, in a migration type that still works.
The final edition of the system carries the version number “2004” and the compilation number the “19041.264”. Its base has also been used as the RTM version delivered to manufacturers for pre-installations on new equipment released from this spring. Both versions include the latest security patches, the correction of detected errors and this time yes, compared to the previous version, Windows 10 1090 (little more than a service pack), a lot of new features.
Windows 10 2004 installation
As we said, the deployment of the version will be more gradual than ever with the aim of limiting the errors that have weighed down on previous updates. Gone is the time when Microsoft updated versions with treachery and nighttime and added millions of computers with errors. Now, the user has more control of the versionsYou can delay it with a counter and even completely ignore it. The system will only be updated when the version is reaching the end of the support time, within a year and a half.
The installation possibilities are varied and in all cases it is recommended to make a backup beforehand in case something goes wrong. The minimum requirements They are repeated from the November update and are very contained, perhaps too much… In practice you will need much more especially in RAM:
1 GB of RAM for 32-bit versions, 2 GB of RAM for 64-bit versions.
32 GB of free disk space.
1 GHz (x86) processor with PAE, NX, SSE2 and support for CMPXCHG16b, LAHF / SAHF and PrefetchW.
800 x 600 pixel resolution.
Graphics card with DirectX 9 and WDDM 1.0 support.
Internet connection for updates.
Method 1 – Windows Update
The phased deployment is verified in the same update tool within the system, located in “Settings> Update and security> Windows Update”. A message will show you if your device is eligible to receive the update. If yes, just follow the instructions. The tool will download what is necessary and update the system keeping applications, files and user data.
If Microsoft has blocked the update on your device for any reason, you will see a message similar to the following image. In theory it is indicative of some incompatibility detected in the equipment related to a known system bug, but the reality may be simpler and it may be that the update is offered in a subsequent phase. In fact, this weekend we have updated two teams with this notice (forcing the update via the web) without any problem.
Method 2 – Update Via Web
Users who do not have the update activated in Windows Update or prefer to use this method, can access the Windows 10 web portal to force it. Simply click on the “Update Now” button to download a file that will launch the process when run.
The wizard will check if the equipment meets hardware requirements demanded.
From there its operation is identical to that of Windows Update. It will download what you need from the Internet and update the system keeping applications, files and user data.
Method 3 – Using MCT
Another installation possibility comes from the media creation tool, whose new version we anticipated last week by leaking before launch. It is used to update the system where it is installed or create external means to update third-party equipment or perform clean installations on any compatible equipment. If you follow us, you must know by heart a process that is repeated in each version of Windows 10, in this way:
– Access the Windows 10 web portal and click on the button “Download the tool now” to obtain the file “MediaCreationTool2004.exe”. Run it and accept the license terms.
– You will go to a screen where you can select the update of the equipment or the creation of a USB / DVD for installation or update of another equipment.
– The first option will update the equipment in question in the same way that we saw in the previous section. The second option will allow you to create a flash drive directly using this tool or download the ISO file to burn it with your preferred tool later.
Method 4 – Direct ISO Images
Microsoft offers the download of ISO images of its Windows operating system and Office suite directly from various portals such as TechBench or the TechNet evaluation center, but you have to be subscribed to them. You can also use the media creation tool, but if you want a most direct method to download ISO images Windows 10 2004, there is an external developer that has a tool to facilitate the task and always with official images obtained from Microsoft’s servers.
– Access the Heidoc.net page and download the Windows ISO Downloader.exe application. It is portable, does not need or installation.
– Run the downloaded file, select Windows 10 and the edition you want to download, for the example Windows 10 Home / Pro.
– Confirm, select the language and if you want the 32 or 64 bit version.
In this case we download the image “Windows10_2004_Spanish_x64.iso”, which we can use on any compatible equipment for updates or installations from scratch once we save the image with our favorite tool. In Windows we recommend using Rufus.
Whatever method you use, in all cases you will get the final version of Windows 10 2004, Build 19041.264. Access the “Settings> System> About” tool to check it and then look for new updates in case Microsoft has patched some of the known errors or those related to security for Windows Defender.
Windows 10 2004, features and news
An important release to confirm whether Microsoft is definitely capable of limiting errors and offering the expected stability. If the previous version (Windows 10 1909) recovered the concept of Service Pack and limited the introduction of new features, this Windows 10 2004 does offer a good number of new features along with the latest security patches and bug fixes. We remind you of them.
Windows 10 is continually updated with system updates that include security updates, but it also includes feature updates. Until now we did not have too much control over the latter, but this version will allow us to better manage both optional updates and those dedicated to drivers. The new controls will be available in the Configuration tool> Windows Update> See optional updates. In addition to the above, Microsoft will allow you to specify the maximum download speed of Windows Update as a percentage of the total bandwidth.
Reinstallation from the cloud
A new support option called “Cloud Download” to recover damaged computers or restore systems to a clean copy no need for installation means nor use local recovery images or partitions. It will complement the current “reset” function of the PC and will be an interesting option in the event of a serious failure that makes the equipment inaccessible and when we do not have other means to recover the equipment.
Microsoft will release in Windows 10 May 2020 Update the second version of the Linux Subsystem for Windows with significant improvements over the original, especially in performance. From a simple compatibility layer, it will now offer a full linux kernel run on a lightweight virtual machine and once installed it will be upgradeable from Windows Update like other Windows components.
In the short term, the user will be able to use their own custom kernel and will be able to connect Linux applications from Windows using localhost and not only through remote IP addresses as until now. Microsoft’s idea is clear: Linux, yes, but without leaving Windows.
Related, although it is offered as a separate application, Microsoft published Windows Terminal 1.0 a couple of weeks ago, the definitive application with which it intends unify command line tools, since you can interact with all of them (Command Prompt, PowerShell or WSL) from the same interface.
One of the great internal management tools continues to expand and in Windows 10 May 2020 Update we will have a couple of interesting news. The most important will be monitoring the temperature of the graphics cards. Another change affects the storage units and in this version their management will be carried out independently for each unit installed in the system, SSD or hard drives.
The importance of gaming for Windows desktop dominance is clear, as is Microsoft’s quest for near-total integration of its gaming ecosystem, Xbox and PC. The Windows 10 game bar is an example of this, it has been improving with each system update and this will show as a novelty the frames per second (FPS) achieved in a game, without having to resort to third-party tools. You can see it in the floating bar of the performance section next to the consumption in% of CPU, GPU and RAM.
Applications after restarts
Windows will catch up with other UNIX-like operating systems that can remember what applications were running before shutting down a computer and automatically start on next boot Of the same. Windows also has an auto-start feature, but it’s limited to apps that you manually add to that list. The new feature is different and will automatically restart applications at startup after activating it in the Settings> Accounts> Login Options tool.
Bloatware continues to roam freely in Windows 10 2004 with a number of really exaggerated installed applications. In addition to the usual Windows applications and services, Microsoft has added in Windows 10 a lot of universal applications for the Modern UI interface, in addition to third-party applications and games that have nothing to do with what we might consider necessary for the operation of the operating system.
Microsoft has not listened to users and Windows 10 is still full of junk, unnecessary or unwanted software, but at least and as a novelty, it allows the uninstallation of some applications such as Paint, Notepad and WordPad. So it should be with everyone. Since a clean system is not offered and optional installation is offered, unless they can be uninstalled.
Virtual desktops were a new addition to Windows 10. Not because they have not been used in Windows in the past, but because it was the first time that Microsoft had natively provided this feature to the system and included it by default as part of the system. operational. However, until now – incomprehensibly – they could not be renamed. Windows 10 May 2020 Update solves the issue and will allow you to put custom names in the task view. They will also have the ability to retain settings between restarts.
Microsoft continues in the task of free your digital assistant of the operating system once its minimum use has been verified and that it has been surpassed by others such as Alexa. Removed from the taskbar, its behavior is now closer to a chat application and its window allows you to resize and move around on your desktop. Microsoft has thrown in the towel with the old Cortana and it remains to be seen if the change of focus towards an assistant to help in productivity works, everything points to being integrated into Microsoft 365 applications.
Microsoft has introduced a new algorithm that detects high disk usage and activity to improve the management of search indexing services, addressing performance issues related to excessive disk and processor usage detected in previous releases. Some features have also been added and searches can now correct spelling mistakes and quick searches are available to help find information online. The user interface has also been improved.
The Network Status page of the Settings app has been redesigned and offers more information. You can instantly see all active connections and access their Properties and data usage.

Removed features from Windows 10 2004
As with all versions, Microsoft has removed some features from the system and fixed others as non-active development, indicating that it will be removed in later versions. Among other affected applications we highlight:
Windows To Go was announced as deprecated in version 1903 and is completely removed in this version. A shame. We have used it a lot.
Microsoft Edge. The legacy version of Microsoft Edge is no longer being developed. Microsoft bets everything on Edge Chromium.
Mobile plans and messaging applications. Both are still supported, but are now distributed in a different way. OEMs can include them in Windows images for cellular-capable devices. They are no longer included in the standard version.
Dynamic discs. This feature is no longer being developed. It will be completely replaced by Storage Spaces in a future release.
Cortana. Microsoft is making the wizard independent, seeing its failure as part of the system, but in addition, it has eliminated some of its previously available skills, such as music, connected home and others.
There are more novelties of this Windows 10 2004 that we will see later, since its base is also used in other products such as Xbox, Hololens or whatever comes from IoT. Microsoft will continue rolling out the phased version, and we assume it will reach a larger user group on Windows Update. Anyway, you will have seen that there are alternatives to install it now.
On the contrary, precisely what you want is delay update, it has never been easier and you can manage it through this practical. Although the version is rated “stable”, there are known bugs and others that may come, so we recommend waiting a little while on production machines until their complete stability is verified.
