The arrival of 5G to the mid-range of smartphones is unstoppable and manufacturers such as Qualcomm and Mediatek have solutions in catalog and in development to cover this space. Taking into account that Apple must release the first iPhone with 5G this year, for next year few mid-range terminals up will be sold without support for the new mobile networks.

In addition to the increased supply from operators expected in various world regions, chips are needed to support them. Samsung is preparing with the Exynos 880 SoC, its own mobile processor under the ARM architecture, which includes two Cortex-A77 cores with 2.0 GHz frequency for intensive tasks and six Cortex-A55 cores 1.7 GHz for all other tasks, in order to improve energy efficiency and increase autonomy.

The GPU is an ARM Mali-G76 MP5, which promises “3D graphics with a high frame rate in games”, APIs and various optimizations for on-screen graphics. Debuts an image signal processor that supports up to five individual camera sensors and can process three sensors. Supports a maximum resolution of 64 MP on the main sensor or 20 MP on dual sensor. Supports 4K video recording and playback at 30 FPS, with multi-codec support for HEVC, H.264, and VP9.

The SoC supports LPDDR4X RAM and UFS 2.1 and eMMC 5.1 storage, but not latest standards such as Wi-Fi 6 and Bluetooth 5.1, falling below previous standards. It is not designed for the high-end and it is also noticeable in its support for screens that is limited to Full HD + (2520 x 1080 pixels).

Its objective is clear and it is to allow 5G in other market ranges with support for 5G NR Sub-6GHz that allows up to 2.55Gbps in downloads and 1.28 Gbps in uploads. Downloads can be increased up to 3.55 Gpbs with dual connectivity feature using 5G and 4G networks.
