Some still believe it is an exaggeration to say that the iPhone SE 2020 is a “recycled” iPhone 8 with a state-of-the-art SoC, but the cutting done by the tireless iFixit experts leaves no room for doubt, Apple has recycled many components of the iPhone 8, and used them on iPhone SE 2020.
This is not only shown by the components used and their internal distribution, but is also conclusively confirmed by the design, the chassis and because we can directly use various components of the iPhone 8 in the iPhone SE 2020such as cameras, display assembly (including microphone and proximity sensor), SIM tray, and Taptic Engine.
The most important novelty is, of course, the SoC. IPhone SE 2020 mounts a chip A13 Bionic, the same that we find in the iPhone 11, and whose power is well above the SoC A11 Bionic which mounts the iPhone 8. RAM has also been increased, going from 2 GB to 3 GB, and the wireless connection module presented by this terminal is inherited from the iPhone 11.
Goodbye iPhone 8, hello iPhone SE 2020
In general, the iPhone SE 2020 is a rather curious hybrid. There is no doubt that it shares an important common ground with the iPhone 8, in fact. maintains up to screen, resolution, panel type and Touch ID sensor, but as we have seen it presents some changes that, by themselves, are enough to justify a name change.
At this point I think it is fair to remember that Apple could have simplified the novelties of the iPhone SE 2020 much more. For example, you could have mounted an A12 SoC instead of an A13, kept the RAM at 2GB and reduced the storage capacity, but in the end you have chosen to shape a configuration that frankly offers quite a value good for what it costs if we are able to see beyond the design and its huge screen borders.
Returning to the iFixit exploded view, the score obtained by the iPhone SE 2020 is a 6 out of 10And these are the positive and negative keys that have led to this assessment:
Changing the screen and battery is easy with the right tools and knowledge.
Most of the components are modular, easy to change and compatible with those of the iPhone 8.
Dust and water resistance is a clear value, but it complicates repairs.
We need four different screwdrivers to carry out a repair.
The rear glass complicates and makes repairs more expensive.
